This is what happens to your free to good home dog on craigslist

Hello animal lovers. This was posted on craigslist this morning. I know that the scammers, dog fighters, lab research abusers will flag that post for removal because they do not want the public to know the sad reality of what will become of your dog or puppy when you offer it free to a good home. Very few of them get a good home. Even if your pet is free, never say so in your ad.

Don't post pets for free

Ok, this pic is as real as it gets. We've got to get people to STOP posting dogs on Craigslist. As you know, because I have talked about it many times here before, Craigslist is the main place online that bait dog hunters look for them. Most people who post ads for dogs and cats on CL are basically ignorant and unaware of the evil that lurks out there and the dangers that lay in wait for dogs on CL. One thing I like to do, and recommend that all of you do, is scan through the ads on your local Craigslist and send messages to the people who are posting them. Be polite and tactful when you do, remember most of them just don't know what is out there trolling for free or cheap dogs to be used for their evil purposes and personal gain. Below is a very thorough message I recommend using to let these people know about the dangers of bait dog and lab testing animal hunters. Feel free to copy and paste this, if you'd like, and of course, you can edit it any way you'd like. Just thought this would help give you an idea of what to say or how to approach the subject in a way that the people won't get offended or become defensive toward you.

This is a basic blueprint:

I am sending you this message in response to the ad you placed on Craigslist for your dog. First off, let me say that I am not trying to be rude or offensive, and I am sure what I am about to say are things you may not be aware of. Craigslist is the most dangerous place you can advertise a dog, or any animal for that matter, especially a free one. I'm not sure if you are familiar with what a bait dog is, so I will give you a quick explanation. People who run dog fighting rings use what are called bait dogs, which are basically punching bags for fighting dogs. As we all know, dogs don't punch; they bite, rip and tear. They are used to teach dogs how to kill, to acquire a taste for blood and to excite a game dog right before it is put into a fight. These evil people tie the bait dog up, so it can't get away. Then they either tape it's mouth shut with duct tape or break it's teeth out, so that it can't fight back. Then they unleash anywhere from one to four dogs on it and let them have at it, usually until it's dead. There are a small percentage of them who survive this, but they are badly maimed and clinging to life. If you want to know more about this, there is book called "Oogy", which is a story about a bait dog who survived. When you see his picture, you will wonder how he ever did survive. Now, what I am getting at is this, Craigslist is the primary place online that these kind of people look for bait dogs. And they are very sneaky. The will come to you acting like they are just looking for a pet, and they may even bring a child with them to sell it even more. They are evil and will do whatever they have to in order to get dogs. They prefer non aggressive Pit Bulls, because their bodies are more similar to what they will be fighting, and will last longer being tortured. But, they will also take about any dog they can get for free or little money. They go through a lot of bait dogs, so they are always looking for more. They use Craigslist because they know they can find dogs there who are listed as "free to good home" or for a very nominal price. So, I strongly urge you, actually I beg you, to remove your ad and find another way to network your dog. If you care about your dog at all, you will take heed to this very real and serious warning. Craigslist is very well known for this type of thing and it happens a lot more than most people realize. Another serious danger that dogs and animals face on Craigslist is from people who are looking for free animals that can be used for laboratory testing. Which is another horrible form of animal abuse. Again, this is very common there and a very real danger they face. I would recommend you network through your friends and family, contact a rescue that handles this breed or, if you must put your dog online, place an ad on Rescueme.com. There is another site called Petfinder.com, but sometimes the same risk is run there, unless it is placed by an established rescue center or shelter. They have ways of screening people. Also, it is always best to charge a rehoming or adoption fee to help weed out those who are looking for free dogs. I hope you understand the grave danger I have warned you about here and take a different route to rehoming your sweet dog. And if you notice, earlier, I recommended that you contact "rescue" not a shelter or humane society. Unless it is a no kill shelter, a dog who is dropped off at a shelter has a very little chance of making it out of there alive. Don't assume that you can take it to a shelter and it will be ok. Most dogs who go to shelters are put to sleep before they are able to find a new home. A lot of people are ignorant to this fact and think they will be adopted and be ok. The truth is, most shelters are overcrowded and don't have room to keep dogs and cats long enough to adopt them out. They have to put them down to make room for new incoming animals. Some animals get a month, some get a week and some only get a couple of days. So please don't take your dog to a kill shelter either. I know this limits your ability to rehome your dog, but more than likely, it would never make it to a good home either of these ways anyway. If you love your dog and you want it to have a good life, or any life beyond you, don't advertise it on Craigslist or the newspaper and don't take it to a shelter.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope it helps you realize the evil dangers that lurk out there for dogs like yours. Feel free to reply to this e-mail if you have any more questions. I am only sending you this message because I am an animal lover and I know what goes on out there on sites like Craigslist. If you question what I am telling you, look it up online or go to Facebook and ask a few people with animal advocate and rescue pages on there. Again, thank you for your time.

  1. Thank you for this post. Craiglist has turned into an online hellhole for criminals and why people continue to risk using it makes no sense at all. Adding a picture to the story will hopefully convince the naive poster that this outcome could very well happen to their pet.
